How Workshifting Could Help Three Commuting Problems

It seems every time you turn on the news you hear about rising mortgage rates, unreasonably congested commutes or unfortunate greenhouse emissions. It’s almost enough to make you want to turn off the news and stay cozy in your house! Which, if you think about it, isn’t such a bad idea.

Now of course we’re not recommending that you hole up in your home and become a hermit, but we are suggesting you consider the global impact that working from home could have. In fact, we’re here to talk about how workshifting is helping to solve a few of the world’s biggest problems one telecommuter at a time — well, sort of.

  1. Working from home helps everyone’s bottom line. It never seems like much at the time, but add up what you end up paying at the gas pump, in the lunch line or on your daily cup of coffee, and you’ll start to see just how much it costs to commute in to work day after day. Add in to that the amount of overhead in electricity, snacks and supplies your company pays for having you in the office. Working from home can save everyone a little cash, which you could put toward the roof over your family’s head — aka your home office.
  1. Telecommuting results in less congestion on the roads. Some — probably very happy — employees get to wakeup, go to work in their jammies (of course, we recommend not doing this if you’re going to be video conferencing), and leave their happy cars in the garage saving mileage. You might think that’s just one less car on the road, but with 3.2 million Americans working remotely, that’s no small dent in drive-time traffic!
  1. Workshifting means a smaller carbon footprint. How’s this for an argument? When you work from home, you’re also doing your part to save the planet. That’s right; by not commuting every day, you are reducing your carbon emissions, which directly translates to a brighter future for everyone.

So there you have it! Remote work is helping to solve three of the world’s biggest problems — sort of — while giving you better work/life balance and saving you money.
